I spent last week in Iowa helping Director of Photography TJ Hellmuth film a documentary and commercial for the Blanden Art Museum. Although I've dealt with a lot of RED™ footage in post, this was my first time on-location shooting with the RED ONE™. I must say I was impressed by the camera's usability. It was easy to operate with lots of customizable buttons to set it up for our specific needs. The menus could use a little reorganization (for some reason there's a sound and an audio menu), but otherwise the RED ONE™ is a fantastic camera to shoot with.
Our two-man crew filmed dozens of interviews, b-roll and the entire commercial spot in just five-and-a-half days. In addition to camera assisting, I also put on the hats of producer, art director, sound recordist, dolly grip and probably a few other things I've forgotten. I really enjoyed the iron-man style filmmaking. It's satisfying to get so much done with just two people. Our small crew also afforded a lot of flexibility, and ultimately led to a much more efficient shoot which allowed us to film a lot of locations very quickly.
